Ocalan's initiative is historic opportunity for peace in Middle East

On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, the Iraqi Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom sent a message to the public opinion today, reaffirming its demand to embrace the initiative for peace and democracy sponsored by the leader Abdullah Ocalan.

The Iraqi Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom confirmed on the occasion of International Day of Peace that “peaceful solutions are the only way to build a better future for the coming generations, and that Mr. Abdullah Ocalan’s initiative titled “Democratic Peace and Society” represents a qualitative leap in dealing with the Kurdish issue, and a historic opportunity to end one of the longest disputes in the Middle East, and that if implemented correctly, it will open the field to a radical transformation toward peace and stability in Turkey, Iraq, and the entire region.”

The statement mentioned that “the dimensions of the Democratic Peace and Society Initiative lie in the transition from armed struggle to political struggle, and that the current phase requires political and legal means to demand rights. This transformation is considered a historic victory that ends four decades of armed struggle.”

The statement explained that the democratic society’s vision as an alternative to the nation-state is what distinguishes the initiative as a model for “a democratic society, integration, and consolidation,” which promotes co-existence among all ethnic, religious, and racial components and focuses on participation and pluralism based on the philosophy of the democratic nation, rather than establishing new nation-states, making it applicable to a diverse society like Iraq and the Middle East.

The initiative called on the Turkish state and government to abandon and move away from “the policy of procrastination and inaction, and work to release Mr. Ocalan to enable him to pursue his duties freely. Only then the initiative will secure the stability of the region as a whole.”

The statement concluded by emphasizing that “Ocalan’s initiative reminds us of the importance of peaceful and diplomatic solutions to conflicts, and that his call does not just involve Kurds, but rather represents a model that can be emulated in other regions experiencing similar disputes, thus promoting a culture of peace and co-existence at the global level.”
