Leader Ocalan’s message sparks renewed calls for his physical freedom
On July 9, 2025, a historic moment unfolded with the broadcast of a video featuring Abdullah Ocalan after nearly 26 years of absolute isolation in Imrali Prison. The rare appearance was watched by millions with great anticipation and emotional intensity, as it revived widespread hope for justice and peace in the region.









Across the streets and public squares of North and East Syria, as well as in Aleppo, people expressed profound joy and were deeply moved by Ocalan’s words. They emphasized that his message renewed their commitment to the cause of his physical freedom, which they consider an uncompromisable demand and an essential condition for achieving a just and peaceful future in the region.
“A Historic Address and a Call for Peace”
Mais Shasho from Aleppo described Ocalan’s address as “historic after 26 years of total isolation,” noting that his message carried profound sentiments of dignity and humanity. She highlighted the celebratory atmosphere among people who believe in Ocalan’s philosophy, viewing even a brief visual message from him as a significant moral victory.
Siham Haj Qanbar, also from Aleppo, shared that seeing Ocalan was an indescribable experience, as her family had long awaited this moment. She affirmed their continued demand for his physical release.
Naima Khalil expressed hope that this appearance would mark the beginning of a process leading to his freedom, describing his words as a heartfelt call for peace and coexistence among the region’s diverse peoples.
“Dreams Realized After Decades”
Sediqa Sheikhmus, mother of the martyr Kawa, said one of her lifelong dreams was fulfilled by seeing Ocalan again. Speaking on behalf of martyrs’ families, she called for urgent steps to secure his release, stating that the hopes of the fallen are now closer than ever to realization.
In Ain Issa, Sabri Nabo, the Co-Chair of the city council, described Ocalan’s appearance as a historic beacon of hope for peace and democracy, and a political victory after decades of struggle. He stressed that Ocalan’s call to end violence and initiate a comprehensive peace process should be met with concrete action by the concerned states.
Zainab Khalil, an official in the Women’s Committee, emphasized that Ocalan’s peace appeal would soon translate into genuine peace and qualitative transformation for the region. She urged that his physical freedom be achieved as a necessary step for this process.

In Al-Darbasiyah, residents expressed overwhelming emotions. Razia Ibrahim stated that “Abdullah Ocalan is our source of strength and confidence. Every time he sends a message of peace, our bond with him grows stronger, along with our dedication to his path. His latest message is a clear invitation to participate in the peace process and contribute to building a democratic society.”
Badi’a Arabo shared her immense happiness after seeing the video, declaring, “Seeing the leader in good health, meeting his family and comrades, is a victory in itself. I was overcome with indescribable feelings — now is the time for freedom and peace.”
Masuj Mohammad regarded the appearance as a testament to Ocalan’s steadfastness and determination, vowing to intensify their struggle until his freedom is achieved.
“We Will Persist in Demanding His Physical Freedom”
Speaking from Shaddadi, Ahmad Al-Asaad of the city’s religious endowments expressed optimism about this historic appearance: “We have long awaited his voice. His message is not exclusive to one people or region; it speaks to all the peoples of the Middle East as a humanitarian call for peace and safe coexistence.”
Muntaha Mohaymed emphasized the positive signs in Ocalan’s words, saying, “We support his recent appeal to resolve crises through dialogue and goodwill. The people’s efforts through demonstrations and forums have borne fruit with this renewed vision of the leader. His message of peace is foundational for building stable, harmonious societies.”
