Lawyer: Physical freedom of leader should enjoy constitutional, legal guarantees
Lawyer Mohammed Amin al-Naimi, co-chairmanship of the Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, noted that the success of the peace call has much to do with the implementation of genuine constitutional and legal guarantees. Al-Naimi emphasized the resolve of the initiative to pursue its persistent steps in pursuing the leader’s physical freedom, describing this step as a precursor to achieving a just and complete peace.

Syrian lawyer Mohammed Amin al-Naimi, co-chair of the Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, underlined the importance of providing the peace and democracy proposal of Leader Abdullah Ocalan legal and constitutional guarantees for success. He underlined that the formal meetings conducted by the occupying Turkish state with the leader, without human rights committees, detract from the seriousness of the peace process and increase the level of suspicion about its objectives.
These were the words of al-Naimi while the occupying Turkish state continues its procrastination and obstructive policy towards pragmatic actions regarding the initiative, although the initiative has been well-received regionally and internationally since its announcement by Leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Al-Naimi explained that the meetings with Leader Abdullah Ocalan until now have been limited to political and familial aspects, while the initiative requires all-encompassing aspects at present, including human rights, legal, military, and economic aspects. He mentioned that Turkey is trying to limit the initiative to narrow frameworks in order to drain it of its actual content.
Al-Naimi emphasized the importance of messages of Prison Leader Abdullah Ocalan, through delegations that met him, to call for the need to study the materials of such messages and take into account each word they convey, given their implications that form a new phase of the peace process in the region.
He stated that insistence of the occupying Turkish state on prohibiting human rights meetings with Leader Abdullah Ocalan is a voluntary weakening of the initiative and reflects the continuation of an authoritarian thinking avoiding democratic solutions. He also continued by stating that Leader Abdullah Ocalan is an international leader, and human rights committees should be provided with an opportunity to meet him and work hard for his bodily liberation. He considered this a fundamental condition for the initiative’s success.
Al-Naimi explained how the Turkish regime continues to follow policies demonstrating its lack of true inclination to establish a true peace process. He added that the Syrian Initiative for the Freedom of the Leader will continue working within the human rights framework until the physical liberty of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is achieved in spite of all Turkish state hurdles.
Al-Naimi declared the initiative’s intention to expand its work in the coming period, by reaching out to the political movement “I Want to Meet Abdullah Ocalan,” in order to unify human rights and popular movements calling for the attainment of the leader’s physical freedom.
He also stated that Leader Abdullah Ocalan is not only working to find a solution for the Kurdish issue, but to find solutions to the issues of the people and nations of the entire region, when the occupying Turkish state continues to deny the identity of native peoples and attempts to impose nationalist hegemony, a policy which will lead Tureky into more crises and conflicts.
Al-Naimi ended with an appeal to the Turkish state to act seriously towards a democratic solution, above all: the physical liberation of leader Abdullah Ocalan, revising the Turkish constitution, reform of anti-terrorism legislation employed as a cover for quelling dissent, the freeing of thousands of political prisoners, and clearing the way for a genuinely democratic parliament.
Al-Naimi has also called on international human rights and humanitarian organizations to embrace their role and pressure the occupying Turkish state to ensure the initiative becomes a success and prevents the region from sliding into war and further bloodshed.
