“Insisting on Freedom” activists conclude talks in Turkey

Young internationalists from European countries have held a series of meetings in Turkey in an act of solidarity with the ongoing process for peace and democratic society.

A group of young people who came together in Europe and identify themselves as internationalists have launched an initiative called “Insisting On Freedom” with the aim of securing the physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and contributing to the democratic resolution of the Kurdish question.

A seven-member delegation consisting of initiative members arrived in Turkey on Thursday for a series of meetings and events.

The delegation submitted a written request to the Ministry of Justice in Ankara to meet with Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, who has been incarcerated in İmralı Island Prison since 1999 when he was handed over to Turkey as a result of an international conspiracy.

On the same day, the activists held a press conference at the headquarters of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Ankara. They called for the immediate release of Abdullah Öcalan from the prison island of İmrali, saying: “We feel the need to take a clear position. As Mr. Öcalan said, long-lasting peace can only be established through democratic politics, not weapons.”

On Friday, the delegation moved to Istanbul. They first visited Asrın Law Office to learn about the progress of Abdullah Öcalan’s trials and the new process. The delegation then met with the “I Need Peace Women’s Initiative” at the General Headquarters of the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK).

The activists then visited JINNEWS, Yeni Yaşam newspaper, Mezopotamya Agency (MA) and the Free Women’s Movement (TJA).

As part of today’s program, the activists held a discussion at the Gölge Cultural Center in the Esenyurt district on “Öcalan’s democratic socialism debates from an internationalist perspective” and “Youth leadership in the Democratic Society process as pioneers of ideological transformation and communist organization.”

During the discussion sessions, the activists emphasized the importance of international solidarity in a democratic society, based on the perspective of Abdullah Öcalan. Drawing attention to the system’s special war policies against youth, they discussed the role of youth in the new process and pointed to the change and transformation that youth will bring about in the Democratic Society process.
