Kurdish politician calls for Turkey to act on leader Ocalan’s peace initiative

In a historic filmed address on July 9, considered a turning point after 26 years of his detention, leader Abdullah Ocalan issued a call described by media, writers, and politicians as a decisive moment in resolving the Kurdish issue and regional challenges.

In this first filmed address in decades, the leader called for an end to armed struggle and urged the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to pursue a political solution, emphasizing that a democratic peace is the only path to securing Kurdish rights.

Jowan Abdulkarim Seko, the Secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria, described the call as “historic and pivotal,” especially amid the radical transformations in the Middle East.

He noted that “this peace call differs from previous ones, which were met with rejection by the Turkish government.” Yesterday, a group of fighters from the Kurdistan Liberation Movement announced their transition to political struggle after laying down and destroying their weapons during a ceremony in southern Kurdistan. They affirmed, “We fully understand the validity, necessity, and importance of this historic step.”

Seko further emphasized that “the PKK has always preferred political solutions over military options, and leader Abdullah Ocalan is now demonstrating his good intentions toward peace.”

He urged the Turkish government to respond to this call by engaging with the Kurdish issue, recognizing Kurdish rights constitutionally and parliamentarily, and releasing political prisoners.

Seko expressed confidence in the initiative’s success given changing international circumstances and the presence of political opposition within Turkey. He noted that the impact of the call extends to all four parts of Kurdistan, calling on Kurdish parties to support the initiative and take responsibility for achieving the Kurdish people’s rights in the region.
